Nina Varya Criswell (2022): But We're in Public (Image # 001)
But We're in Public explores the conventions of physical spaces and the ways in which they dictate the behavior of our bodies, in both a physical and social sense. I paint use layered and overlapping forms to disrupt these spaces with the presence of disfigured bodies as a way of speaking to tensions between the ritualistic and the disruptive, the mundane and the violent, the public and the deeply private. I am curious about the traces our bodies imbue in these spaces and the ways in which architecture is created to reflect these very traces and habits.
