TRUCE consists of six distinct objects that reference common furniture forms, each with an intervention in the form of paint. The starting point of my thesis was my love and devotion to both painting and furniture as two mediums that I am called to engage with. Each furniture object is rendered non-functional, either by design or by the application of paint. As such, furniture design and craft became a formal presentation in the show, subverting the questions that surround the distinctions between high and low art. The work resulted in an exploration of what each medium could offer to the types of conversations that happen in a gallery setting, the different ways that furniture orders and orients the body in space, and the (sometimes violent) interactions that occurred between wood and paint.
