An Pham (2021): This Daughter Mine (Image # 001)
My visual work is part of a joint thesis with the Feminist, Gender, and Sexualities Studies department, which includes a lengthy written component as well. The work explores my personal, embodied experiences with sex, pleasure, exposure, and intimacy. I center self portraiture as the mode of depiction, which posits my work as a subjective expression of a singular body, at times in relation to other bodies. I place myself in conversation with the various ways in which the Asian femme body has been depicted in art and media, especially pornography. I intend to subvert “the gaze”, returning it to the viewer, affording myself, an Asian femme, with agency and subjectivity. I juxtapose displaying with obscuring, furthering my control over how my body may be viewed. I also juxtapose exhibitionism with voyeurism by posing both by myself and with a partner, which upsets and resettles the position of the viewer and their role in the sex. Though my artwork supplements a written thesis, it may be understood on its own, having built a robust visual language for itself.
