This thesis traces the trajectory of the Hawthorne effect, a psychological term based on the famous experiments conducted at Western Electric's Hawthorne Plant beginning in the 1920s. It also examines, more generally, how and why particular knowledge claims are produced during the scientific experiment, and, subsequently, how such claims travel out of the laboratory.
