This thesis examines the question of how to remain free as an individual while living in society with others, with particular consideration for the threat posed to modern democracy by an unbalanced answer. Through an exploration of agonistic democracy, the thesis argues that a conception of politics as contestation between competing political ideologies provides the best solution.
