While the Iraq War and continuing engagement have been discussed in a wide range of sources, additional perspectives on the war have been described by veterans in interviews and memoirs, as well as in modern plays that seek to portray the experience of veterans stationed overseas and upon their return to the United States. This thesis examines the works of six playwrights in conjunction with veterans’ memoirs and interviews to incorporate a different, but historically valid, perspective into the larger narrative of the Iraq War. Specifically, this thesis focuses on the experiences of veterans with PTSD and their depiction onstage. Ultimately, this thesis argues that these plays and memoirs put the truth of veterans’ personal experiences on center stage, which in turn provides a historical context in which to view the Iraq War that is unparalleled in terms of its emphasis on the personal stories of many.
