This thesis is an ethnography of the BNote, Baltimore's local currency. Finding myself in the hiatus of its activities, I follow the material BNote and the social infrastructure built around it as they each have moved around and through the city since 2011. I interweave Baltimore’s raced and classed city landscape with interviews with the BNote’s creators and maintainers to evaluate its effectiveness in building a community economy. After both finding successes and struggles to embrace those at the margins, the BNote takes a sharp turn towards the future in my final chapter. Ultimately, I explore potentials for non-capitalist economies and their connections to racial justice. This is a deeply place-based project, and engages with Baltimore’s history as a zone of both abandonment and (re)habitations.
