This thesis comparatively examines the poetics of Rainer Maria Rilke and Paul Celan, specifically between Rilke's writing period around the 1910s and Celan's writing as well as the change of writing from the 1950s to the 1960s. The base of comparison stems from their concerns and struggles with the problem of their poetic content being ossified artistically. Nonetheless, the perspectives and the extent of their struggles vary and can be traced to their individual works. By examing one poem by Rilke and two poems, written in different periods, by Celan, I argue that Celan's poetic resistance is exactly against Rilke's poetics of Dinggedicht (Thing-Poem), and has to be understood as a continuous reworking of poetry to overcome the pull of Rilke's poetics.
