In NASCAR America, the culmination of a summer of digital fieldwork and my lifelong immersion in American stock car racing fan culture, I describe how NASCAR’s masculinist melodrama communicates a vision of the American nation to its fans, a vision of good ol’ boys and their souped-up muscle cars, of meritocracy and patriotism, and how the political aims of that national image were revealed over the course of a contentious 2020 season.
