Interpersonal discrimination affects Black emerging adults an individual level and has been shown to predict collective action behavior. The understanding of larger, systemic injustice, however, might grant the ability to contextualize these harmful experiences as common among one’s in-group, serving as a partial mediating variable to the supported link between discrimination and collective action. Scant research has considered the emergence of specifically Black Lives Matter-related collective action and how it may differ from general action, especially given the ability to relate personal experiences to those of viral instances of police brutality. With this in mind, this study sought to understand the relationships, if any, between interpersonal discrimination, critical reflection, and participation in Black Lives Matter-related collective action and general Black collective action orientation. Results showed significant positive relationships between all measured variables, indicating potential support for a novel conceptualization of how interpersonal discrimination impacts collective action behavior.
