This paper examines four closely-related topics in Euripides' Bacchae: the religious backdrop of 5th century Athens; the use of plants in the play and in Dionysian cult; the transformation of Pentheus and the metatheatrical nature of the Bacchae; and the political implications of Dionysus' new regime for Thebes.
