This thesis is a comparative analysis between works of feminist science fiction by Ursula Le Guin and Octavia Butler. Analyzing themes related to the gendered interpenetration of the public and private spheres––sex and consent; the family and kinship; and the second-wave feminist credo “the personal is political”––I seek to illustrate the indispensability of Le Guin’s utopian imagination but how, in its inevitable cracks and fissures, Butler picks up, displaying complex negotiations between domesticity and power while we look towards a feminist future.
