This thesis analyzes the way in which four television shows (Maude, Sex and the City, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and I May Destroy You) present their central female characters, and how those characters exhibit choice over their sexual bodies. The analysis is broken down into three aspects related to female sexuality: sex, abortion, and sexual assault. These shows are approached as case studies and are evaluated by their content, structure, style, and comedic attitudes. These case studies illustrate the way in which a show’s style and storytelling priorities can either facilitate or limit discussion of “taboo” subjects related to female sexuality.
